Happy New Year! As a non-fiction writer, I've been intrigued by the number of "Meetup" groups that have popped up in the tristate area under the name: "Shut Up and Write!" Most of these groups are in NYC but lately I've noticed a few in Montclair and Morristown. So I've decided to put some feelers out to see if the idea will work in my community. (You don't have to live in Maplewood or South Orange to join us.) The "Shut Up and Write!" Meetups are not a critique group or a writing class. They ar …

The group (or whoever RSVPs) meets once a week. For 1-2 hours (or however long you can stay) we sit down and write quietly. Once a month we'll get together afterwards to talk about our writing or just socialize. I'm not interested in critiquing, lectures, and the like.

We welcome people who are serious about ‘writing down the bones’ and are looking for the companionship of other writers. Meetup Format Making the time to write one hour per week is an …

This is a group for writers who want to master powerful strategies to write better. The organizer, Charles Euchner, is a former teacher and administrator at Yale and Harvard and the author of a number of acclaimed works on politics, sports, civil rights, and more. The approach: Euchner has developed what he called a "brain-based system" for writing well. What's that mean? It means that if you understand how the brain works -- how the brain gets engaged or confused, what makes it excited or bore …

Writer’s Block: Is It Real? Why do we want to write but find ourselves unable to do it? Perhaps it is as simple as this: We are simply having a thought -- a thought like: I don’t have the time. It won’t be any good. I’ll just quit anyway. I always do. No one will like it. I don’t feel like it. It’s too hard. I need to feel moved to write. I need to be inspired. There will be no pay off. I am no good at it. Not really. Others are better at it than I am. I’m too tired. I need to watch TV or check …
So I majored in Creative Writing in college and loved my workshop classes. I vowed to find one after I graduated so that I kept up with my writing. That was over three years ago. If you are an aspiring writer, love to write to release stress or just like to write as a hobby, but don't really find yourself motivated, then join my group. I love to write, but I feel that its too hard to do …

This is a guided writing group. Each week we write two pages on an assigned topic and read it aloud at group. The focus is on symbolic writing that explores the depths of our unconscious minds through narrative writing. Our group is highly supportive of each others' writing and this group is less about critique and more about exploring what the symbols in the writing mean to us. Based on concepts from the work of Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Marie Louise Von Franz, Marion Woodman, and other autho …
